I worked with Pankajavalli Ramakrishnan, MD, PhD, on Stroke Awareness in the Hampton Community. The internship project was very successful.

Fall 2017 Research: Stroke Awareness Program

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore strategies that will enable Hampton Roads communities to identify stroke risk factors, recognize stroke symptoms, and contact EMS should they suspect a stroke.

Method:

• Members from the following groups participated in this study: faculty and staff of Riverside College of Health Careers (RCHC); church members of Hampton and Norfolk Pentecost Assemblies; and social media users in Hampton Roads (Facebook, Instagram, and/or WhatsApp)
  

• The researcher administered a questionnaire to assess stroke knowledge: prior to, immediately after, and at 1-week post-education to participants.
  

• In addition, two-stroke educational awareness videos were administered after the prior stroke knowledge questionnaire. B.E.F.A.S.T video and Stroke Awareness video

• Data was analyzed to assess: pre-educational stroke knowledge awareness, post education immediate retention, Post education delayed retention, identify possible demographic, and socioeconomic influences impacting stroke awareness.

Brief results (not all included):

• 91 Participants took the pre-educational survey and videos: prior awareness of stroke = a lot - 25%, little bit - 59%, nothing - 7%

• 75 post-educational immediate retention survey: prior awareness of stroke = a lot - 24%, little bit - 45%, nothing - 6%

• 52 post-educational delayed retention survey: prior awareness of stroke = a lot - 33%, little bit - 18%, nothing - 1%

• 52 participants = Rate overall stroke awareness training: Very good/professional - 43, Good - 8, Average - 1

• Participants knowledge on stroke symptoms improved.

Vee Inspire Global's Health Educational Project was inspired by the Fall 2017 Stroke Awareness Research Program. The vision is to provide health education on preventable care and treatment. Vee Inspire Global helps community members stay healthy, access prompt treatment when necessary, and aid in lowering the death rate. We also increase health educational research.

We are currently looking for collaboration, partnership, and sponsorship to promote the Health Education Project.
